Sounds like Wertham would make a good living scamming wingnuts these days.

I guess Batman can’t be blamed for gun violence by the NRA…..

With that said, it is extraordinary how repressed and fearful American society was even up till the 1950s.

This is a paradox for me in my understanding. The USA being as free as any nation has ever been in terms of expression is also more repressed than other nations when it comes to sexual taboos and also more fearful (Satanic panics of the 1980s and early 90s, the teen delinquency scare of the 1950s, etc). How can a free society be so afraid of freedom?

Sexual frustration/repression is my guess.

There is also another aspect of this and that is the embrace of the “paranoid style of American politics”, how can our society, where information is now even more widely available for fact checking and where information is almost without cost (libraries are mostly free to join and online does have an access cost) we still have a whole section of the American people denying reality and engaged in paranoid views of current events and I am not talking about birthers either.

Anyway, it puzzles me - it’s paradoxical. I expect populations to be paranoid in Russia or China but they are not as paranoid as we are as a society.

Maybe it’s a money factor? Fear sells and Americans love buying and selling?

re: #2 Destro

I suspect that as social beings who traditionally lived in small clan groups that most humans really crave some limits and security. Our brains seek patterns ceaselessly and we want to be able to manipulate our environment, because being out there alone and defenseless is pretty scary.
With great freedom, comes a lack of group cohesion and protection.
